HOW AND WHERE TO VOTE IN THE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS 2011

All members of the European Union resident here in Spain are entitled to vote in the Municipal Elections on May 22, 2011.
If your name is on the local census (ie. you have a current padrón) you will have received a “Tarjeta censal” through the post (see illustration). This document provides the name of the municipal area where you are entitled to vote (Calasparra); the district number; the Section number; the Mesa (table); and the polling station where you may vote.
The only information you need to enable you to vote is the “mesa,” (the actual voting table inside the polling station where you register, normally identified with a letter) and the address of the polling station (Local electoral).
You will need to show an identification document at the “mesa” in order to vote. This may be a residency card with photo that has your DNI number; your passport; your driving licence with photo; Spanish identity card or “extranjero (foreigners) identity card.
It does not matter if these documents are out of date but photocopies will not be accepted.
Polling stations will be open on Sunday May 22 from 9am to 8pm. If you are inside the polling station when the doors are officially closed you will be permitted to vote.
Voting is not obligatory in Spain but free and fair voting is a full democratic right under the law.
