If you are receiving free health care in Spain and have a full medical card do not panic if you receive a bill for the care you receive!
Under a new scheme, piloted in Andalusia but recently extended nationally, the health service is going to send out “shadow bills” for operations, X-rays, and various treatments in order to inform patients of the cost. These are aimed at raising awareness of the cost of health care and encouraging responsible use of the health service. They do not require any payment.
The bills should be clearly marked and explained but if you can´t read Spanish they may cause some alarm. If you receive such a bill and have any doubts ask at the local medical centre or the local Consumer Rights Office in Calle Lavador.
