HAIL, ELECTRIC STORMS AND TORRENTIAL RAIN

An electric storm, hail and 76.4 litres of rainfall per square metre was reported in Calasparra yesterday as the streets became rivers and a torrent of water flooded through the Valle de Sol urbanisation.
The North West region of Murcia, of which Calasparra forms part, received the brunt of the storms yesterday with hailstones of two centimetre in diameter, streets and
main roads cut off, including the road from Calasparra to Moratalla, underbuilds and cellars flooded, and 20 residents evacuated into the Municipal Pavillion in Caravaca.
An intense hailstorm, torrential rain and hours of thunder and lightening hit Calasparra town and the surrounding countryside during yesterday afternoon and again later at night rendering the storms drains useless, flooding the streets and transforming the countryside into a lake.
Some 12 calls from Calasparra were received by the Emergency Services.
The Met Office, AEMET, had increased the Weather Warning for Thursday from Yellow to Orange, for torrential rain, hail and storms.
