GEOLOGICAL SITE RECLAIMED AND TRANSFORMED AS TOURIST ATTRACTION

Cabezo Negro, recently declared a site of “international geological interest” was used as a quarry during the 50’s and 60’s and then as a pubic dump until experts from the
University studying the site raised the alarm.
Last week the 33,000 euro project to clean up and transform the area into a tourist attraction was officially opened by the Mayor of Calasparra, Jesus Navarro, and the head of the Department of Tourism.
Cabezo Negro, at the side of the Polvora Resturant just off the Sanctuary roundabout, was so named due to the intense black colour of the “lamproíticas” rocks (crystallized rocks resulting from a volcanic activity) forming the hillock, which experts claim could be “unique in the world. The mound, 400 metres by 225 metres wide, is an outcrop consisting of a “complete volcanic apparatus.
The project has included improved access to four different zones: viewing points; volcanic site and two leisure areas with information boards.
The Mayor underlined the importance of the area as a “new tourist attraction” for Calasparra.
