GENERAL STRIKE LOOMS AS TWO UNIONS WALK OUT ON REGIONAL TALKS

Two of the largest regional Trade Unions are threatening to call a General Strike after walking out on negotiations over austerity measures with the regional Government of Murcia.

Following the walk out the unions called an eighth day of action against the cuts which brought 40,000 trade unionists onto the Gran Via, Murcia, last Friday and they are refusing to discount the possibility of calling a national strike.

The teaching and health union banners were missing from the protest march as they have reached some agreement with the regional Government.

Industrial action by teaching and auxiliary staff in Calasparra has been in effect for the last two weeks and various activities including sit-ins, protests outside the Town Hall, and refusal to carry out extra duties, which could effect the arrangements for the Carnival, have caused some level of disruption at most of the local schools.

Medical staff had announced this week they were to begin a go slow which would have affected out patients at hospitals throughout the region, however, following their agreement with the regional government this action has been called off.

Teaching staff have accepted a reduction in monthly wages of 35.5 instead of 75 euro, an increase in the working day and the freezing of pension contributions which has been maintained.

Health staff have reached agreement on payments for covering their colleagues, extra payments for fiestas and a longer working day.

The cuts, which took effect from December last year, affect all public sector salaries, working hours, conditions, pensions and holidays.
