FRUIT FARMERS IN CALASPARRA AMONGST THE WORST HIT BY FREAK HAILSTORM

Calasparra Town Hall held a special meeting last night to call on the regional and national governments to help farmers in Calasparra who have lost up to 2000 hectares of apricots and 2,400 hectares of peaches and plums due to Saturday’s 40 minute hailstorm.
The Mayor of Calasparra has announced that some 63% of local farmers, particularly those who are members of the large cooperatives, are covered by insurance.
Antonio Moreno, secretary of UPA (Union of Small Farmers) has announced that some fruit farmers in the local area have suffered 80% losses and others 100%.
The regional government and the Town Hall are also seeking to take measures to alleviate the dramatic situation of casual workers in the region who have lost 15,000 work days due to this natural catastrophe.
