The last stretch of the Via Verde, 29.7 kilometres running between Murcia and Baños de Mula, has been officially opened by the General Directorate of Sustainable Development in the Environment, a regional dependent of the national Ministry.
This final stretch of the Via Verde del Noreste, which now runs from Murcia to Caravaca, completes the whole 50.3 kilometres of the path at a total cost of 1.175.281 euros.
Work has included restoration and clearing of the actual path, excavations, and drainage. The iron railway bridge over the River Segura has been restored as part of the project and wooden hand rails, wooden steps, platforms and fords across streams have been installed.
Information panels, signposts, benches and litter bins have been distributed in six areas rest areas along the route. Bushes and trees have also been planted to improve the general quality of the natural environment.
