A thirty metre fig tree estimated to between 300 and 600 years old in the Almadenes Canyon has been entered in the book, “Trees, Living Legends” as one of the most important trees in Spain.
Scientists have counted some 633 rings of growth on this spectacular tree which grows near the Mulata Damn (Presa de la Mulata) in the canyon.
The book, which is aimed at walkers and nature lovers, provides the location, route and technical data on the 3,700 trees singled out by Woods Without Frontiers, an NGO which fights to protect the most emblematic examples in Spain.
The United Nations has designated the first day of spring, Monday, as the International Day of the World Forests to try and raise awareness of their importance in the life cycle.
