Recent excavations at the Abrigos del Pozo at the base of the River Segura in the Sierra Molino have confirmed that the caves and “shelters” (abrigos) were inhabited more than 8,000 years ago.
Although no new materials were discovered during these excavations they underline the importance of the site which dates back to the epipaleolítica age (between the ice and bronze ages).
The Abrigos del Pozo is a network of caves and shelters of special interest to archeological potholers and boast one of the finest examples of cave drawings (art rupestre) in the region of Murcia.
The excavation work was funded by the Ministry of Promotion and the local Town Hall.
