A 42.900 euro project, financed by the EU and executed by the regional Department of Environment, will recuperate and improve public «montes» in Calasparra.
The 7,45 hectares included in the project are in the Sierra del Puerto and the Serrata and Cabeza Mulata (lying approximately between the Quipar reservoir and the Almadenes Canyon).
The work will be carried out over a period of three months.
These areas represent a singular eco-system in the South East Iberic area with a high ecological value for its rich flora and its function as a refuge for animals of interest to the community.
The work will include controlling vegetation and tracking the evolution of the habitat to guarantee the effectiveness of methods applied. The techniques applied will have a low environmental impact and will adapt to the topographical conditions of the terrain, prioritising areas which have been seriously altered.
These methods include selective clearance of bushes to facilitate the development of herbaceous perenniales typical of the area; the mechanical and manual elimination of exotic species; and work to relieve the leafy native plants and trees to encourage their natural regeneration as well as planting local seeds in areas where diversity has disappeared.
The project also includes the installation of Display Graphics with information about the local habitat to raise public awareness.
