All the current prices for electricity, gas and electricity and gas combined, offered by the different commercial companies are featured on a special webpage by the National Energy Commission.
The webpage (www.comprador.cne.es) enables customers to calculate the annual cost of the energy they consume and compare the different prices on offer on the “free market.”
The “free market” for energy (electricity, gas or a combination of electricity and gas) was introduced last July and aimed to give the customer a better deal by opening up the energy market to competition. However, the price difference offered by the 18 different commercial companies is minimal and represents an average saving of just 2.5%: working out at approximately 25 euros a year.
Customers who do not opt for free market energy pay a “Tarifa de Ultimo Recurso” which is fixed by the Government. Currently 5.5 kw of contracted electricity with an annual usage of 5,000 kilowatts an hour costs 1,009 euros on the government tariff. The current best commercial offer on the webpage for similar usage is 983 euros.
