The local police had to be called to calm an angry crowd at the Municipal Auditorium in Calasparra on Saturday evening after fashion show organizers shut many of them out of the building.
The problems began before the doors opened at 7pm as, mostly family members of the 50 odd models, began to gather outside the doors of the Auditorium. It was obvious before the doors opened that the auditorium with its capacity for only 300 spectators would not be able to accommodate the assembled crowd and that many would be excluded from the event.
“There were very small children taking part and we could not take any kind of risk,” said a spokesperson for the local Chamber of Commerce which organized the show. “We were clear that entrance was free to capacity and once the auditorium was full we had no choice except to close the doors. However, the people simply did not want to understand. “
After the local police arrived the crowds were eventually persuaded to go home and watch the fashion show on local television.
The spokesperson for the local Chamber of Commerce has said the organisation is considering re-running the show so everyone can who wants to can attend and to stage it in a bigger public space. However,” she claimed, “the show, with 40 participating local businesses, was a great success.”
