The rice fields of Calasparra are to pilot growing hops for a projected “100% Murcian beer” for the regional company, Estrella de Levante.
The hops will be grown in one or two hectares of the rice fields which are currently fallow as part of the crop rotation programme.
Estrella de Levante and the Superior Technical School in Agricultural Engineering of Cartagena University have chosen the ecological rice fields of Calasparra to pilot growing hops for a new totally regional beer. Currently hops for the company´s beer are grown in Castilla de Mancha.
If the pilot is successful the project will be expanded and will offer new opportunities for the farmers of Calasparra and the possibility that the town will have its own beer.
