Four Murcian scientists have discovered a protein in broccoli which stops skin ageing and supports skin regeneration following burns or skin cancer.
The scientists are currently applying for a patent for the protein, called BOP, which may be used in cosmetics such as face cream or gel.
CEBAS, the biological centre where the discovery was made, in Lorca have been working for four years towards using the protein commercially.
CEBAS has also investigated the qualities of broccoli as a food and has discovered it has properties that may help prevent cancer and illnesses related to the digestive and respiratory systems.
A group of scientists, AQP and Ingredients at the Scientific Park in Murcia, will continue the investigations and prepare the protein for commercialization.
