BRITISH CONSULS MEET PRESIDENT OF REGION TO DISCUSS ABUSE OF BRITISH RESIDENTS

Two representatives of the British Embassy met with the President of the regional autonomous government of Murcia, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, yesterday to discuss the interests of British residents in the region who have fallen victim to “abusos urbanisticos.”
The British Consul in Spain, Timothy Giles Paxman, and the British Consul in Alicante, Paul Rodwell, have asked Valcarcel to help British residents in the region who have suffered “urbanistic abuse.” At a Press Conference the Britsh Consul explained that the “rapid urban development had produced abuse, corruption and confusion.”
There are 22.000 British citizens with “padrons” in the region but the Consul calculates there could be as many as 40,000 living here, the majority of whom he described as “retired and who do not speak the language.”
The Consul has introduced the Project Conexiones in the region of Murcia (Connections Project), which is currently operating in Alicante, and which aims to put social protection services in contact with the multiple associations of volunteers which provide services for the British community. The object of the scheme is that these associations form part of the system of Social Policy in the region.
