Last ditch efforts by the Town Hall to save the traditional infant’s Carnival Parade have failed: there will be no public procession this year.
Local authority staff met with representatives of the infant schools again yesterday to try and resolve the situation. After the meeting they reported “no change” in the posture of school staff: the Carnival will be celebrated with the school perimeters, there will be no parade.
The schools have denied that the event has been cancelled due to industrial action being taken by teaching unions in protest against regional cuts to public sector pay and increased working hours. The staff blame the cancellation on the financial crisis.
Every previous year the smallest pupils of the town have chosen a modern or traditional theme for their costumes, each school with a different innovative idea, marching through the Plaza de la Corredera and enchanting the entire population.
Even though apparently the children’s parade will not go ahead there will be events organized by the Town Hall to celebrate the carnival. Watch this webpage for information as we receive it.
