A WALKING DATE TO THE CENAJO RESERVOIR IN APRIL

Even during the drought the Cenajo Reservoir was an impressive sight with its great rock walls and the road across the dam disappearing into the cliffs.
The great damn was built by Franco’s political prisoners and presumably they also lugged the dictator’s great cross up the sheer rock face where it stood over them as they worked, many of them to their deaths. There is a memorial plaque on the hotel side of the damn.
Water reserves in the region of Murcia are at an all time high after years and years of drought and the Cenajo reservoir is currently at 71.8% capacity.
The third date on the Municipal Walking Calendar will give you the opportunity to see this magnificent damn and reservoir in all its glory and offers a route along the First Section of the River Segura (from the Cenajo reservoir to Salmeron).
The route is graded as Medium Difficulty and is 14K long. Walkers pick up the coach outside the Municipal Football Stadium at 8am on Sunday April 10. Registration at the Tourist Office, Calasparra . Registration fee: 5€.
