Calasparra will apply to UNESCO for the rice fields, the riverside forests and the Almadenes Canyon to be declared Biosphere Reserves.
Biosphere Reserves are areas with ecosystems recognised under an international plan, the MAB Programme of UNESCO. The plan aims to harmonize the integration of populations with the natural surroundings in order to promote a participatory dialogue, an exchange of knowledge, the reduction of poverty, an improvement in well being, a respect for cultural values and the capacity of society to adapt to change.
The decision to apply to UNESCO is a result of an unanimous decision of the full Town Hall council meeting.
