MASS RALLY IN MURCIA FOR FARMERS

Hundreds of protesters represeting agriculture all over the region converged on Murcia last week to demand more support from the regional government.
The protest is mainly a response to the disastrous spring weather when high temperatures brought on early flowering, subesquently frozen by extreme frosts in late February and early March.
Under the slogan “For work and dignified agricultural insurance” the protesters gathered outside the Government Delegation in the centre of Murcia.
The demonstations are likely to continue as Miisters fail to give any assurances of help for fruit farmers affected by frosts on February 17.
In Calasparra the losses have been calculated at 1.8 million euros with 28% of the 350 hectartes of nectarine and peach plantations being affected. Some 26% of the almond harvest is expected to fail.
