DIOSA WORKERS ASK REGION TO REFLOAT CANNING PLANT BUSINESS

The former workers of the Conservas Fernández canning plant (known as La Diosa) have asked the regional government for a 33.5 million euro loan to refloat the canning plant.
The 300 former employers have been left without work since they were sacked and the business went into the hands of creditors.
Yesterday . accompanied by the Mayor of Calasparra, José Velez, the delegation of workers met the regional President, Camara, and Rosa Peñalver to appeal for the refloating of the company and the resumption of production at the plant.
The Mayor commented that as the company was currently in the process of liquidation none of the businesses interested in buying the plant could do so. He suggested an “easier and more direct” solution was that the court dealing with the matter should order the immediate liquidation of the business, as it had with Halcon Foods , another company in the same situation.
Velez also suggested that the regional government should “rectify its error” of granting a loan of 33.5 million euros to the current owners and use the money to directly refloat the business.
Rosa Peñalver stressed how important it was that the canning plant, trade mark Diosa, began production again, generating 300 direct employment places and 600 during more seasonal jobs.
“It would change the economy of the Calasparra,” she said.
