THE MAYOR FIGHTS TO RE-OPEN LA DIOSA

Re-opening the Diosa Canning Plant has always been one of the Town Hall’s prioritites and this week the current Mayor of Calasparra, José Velez, will meet with the official receiver and the judge to try and iron out the legal obstacles.
The factory closed in 2012 and the owners, the Halcon Grou which bought up the Conservez Fernandez, closed the factory putting some 300 workers on the street.
In mits hayday the plant specialised in processing artichokes and peppers and provided employment for 30 fixed term workers and 280 seasonal workers.
The Mayor says: “We have companies, in writing, who are prepared to start working from these premises which will provided much needed employment posts for the a local area.”
José Velez will hold meetings with the official receiver and the judge between July 6 and 10 to “try and iron out the legal obstacles which prevent the sale of the plant.”
