Under the new Natural Resources Ordenance Plan the Almadenes Canyon will become a Nature Reserve subject to special protection.
The Almadenes Canyon, between Calasparra and Cieza, has been inhabited since the Paleolithic age. Its caves and rocky shelters were used by prehistoric populations attracted by the rich resources of the river Seguro. The area is very fertile and there have been salt flats and mines since time inmemorial.
The Sima Cave of La Serreta, with its invaluable cave drawings, is one of the most popular enclaves in the canyon and has been declared a place of special interest and part of the Spanish Historical Patrimony and the Patrimony of the Humanity by UNESCO.
The Natural riches of the canyon have also been validated as a Place of Importance to the Community (LIC), form part of the Special Protection Zone for Birds (ZEPA), and are included in the European project, Natural Network .
2000.
Included in the proposals for the canyon are environmental conservation measures including the necessity to coordinate actions with the Water Board to improve protocols aimed at limiting damage caused by an increase in caudal and regulation of public access and sports activities.
