SEAT BELT AND CHILD RESTRAINT CONTROLS

Some 250 Guardia Civil Traffic Officers will take part in a massive campaign to monitor the use of seat belts and appropriate child restraints on the region´s roads between today, Monday, and next Sunday.
More than 18,000 vehicles are expected to be stopped and inspected for use of seat belts and child restraints for children under 12 years old.
According to the Guardia Civil these controls reduce the risk of accidents by half.
In 2014 some 6,707 people in the region were fined for not wearing seat belts or failing to have the appropriate child restraints: some 14% of these lost points on their driving licences.
In a head on crash a driver or passenger is eight times more likely to die if not wearing a seatbelt. If the vehicle rolls the risk of mortality is reduced by 77%, according to official sources.
In 2013 three in every ten people who died on the region´s roads were not wearing seatbelts.
