The local chief of police is warning owners of properties in the countryside around Calasparra to take precautions following a wave of robberies around the iron bridge (puente de hierro) area, the road to Valentin and the lower sanctuary road near the Olivarejo.
Police chief, Miguel Moret, says many of the country properties are second homes which are abandoned by ther owners at this time of year making them an easy target for thieves.
A special task force has been set up to catch the culprits and suspicions are that it is a local gang.
The police have set up control points at the entrances to Calasparra as a deterrent and advise property owners to exercise extreme precautions. They also appeal to everyone to report any suspicous movements.
The thieves have been stealing jewellery and electrical domestic appliances and have caused significant damage to the properties targetted.
