After two hours the fire on the Cabezo del Doctor, which is on the right hand side of the motorway in the direction of Caravaca shortly after the slip road for the Sanctuary, was declared under control.
The emergency services received numerous calls after fire broke out in the area and firefighters from Calasparra and Caravaca supported by two helicopters were called in to tackle the blaze.
The fire was first reported at 7.54pm last Thursday evening but by ten past nine the emergency services delcared the fire under control. At this point the helicopters withdrew but firefighters stayed in the area to “dampen down” and by early Friday morning the fire was almost completely extinguished.
