PP WITHDRAWS ATTACK ON WOMEN WHO ABORT

The representative of the Partido Popular in Calasparra who is responsable for Health and Social Policy in opposition has apologised in the regional press today for calling women who abort “terrorists.”
Davinia Saorin, elected representative of the opposition Partido Popular, has apologised for comments she made on February 5 when she declared women who had abortions were terrorists.
She has declared herself a “loyal defender of the right to life” and announced that she is favour of abortion in cases of rape; if a life is in danger; or if fetal malformations are life threatening.
She claims she did not intend to offend anyone and had used the term “terrorists” mistakenly.
The national debate on the new draft Abortion Law echoed around the Council Chamber in Calasparra when the ruling Socialist Party and the United Left voted for a motion criticising the bill as a limitation of women´s rights.
There have been mass demonstrations throughout Spain and the proposed bill has been criticised as “a retrograde step for women´s rights” in the European Parliament.
The bill is still at draft stage with voting expected to take place before the summer recess.
