All Town Halls in Spain are responsible for abandoned and stray dogs in their area. Many local administrations use Cereco based in Crevillente, Alicante, to fulfill these obligations.
Cereco offers a municipal service to Town Halls which includes the collection of abandoned or stray dogs. In Calasparra this service operates on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Residents can report the stray dog to the Town Hall and/or detain it until one of the collection days.
Contrary to rumour Cereco does not put dogs down or “gas” them. The dogs are taken to the Cereco kennels where they are deloused and debugged. There is a constant control of food and higiene and sanitary conditions.
The date the dog was collected is recorded with a photo. If the animal is lost and carries identification or is chipped the owner will be traced. All other animals are put up for adoption after receiving common immunisations and being microchipped.
