The Arrixaca hospital in Murcia has reopened 13 operating theatres, closed on Monday due to a strike by cleaning staff.
Some 20 patients had their operations yesterday morning once the problem of accumulated rubbish in the accesses to the operating theatres had been resolved.
During the night workers blocked the access to the surgical block with wooden boards to protect the patients arriving by lift from hospital wards.
According to the Directoir of the hospital, José Vicente Albaladejo, some workers “who were not on strike” cleaned the lift area and guaranteed hygiene.
Striking workers have agreed to provide a mínimum service but rubbish continues to accumulate in many parts of the hospital.
Some 49 operations have been cancelled due to the industrial action.
At a meeting yesterday striking workers voted to resume negotiations with hospital
management.
