The Food Bank in Calasparra is on the brink of collapse as the demand from local families without resources increases.
According to the President of the local Red Cross, Francisco Morcillo, the organisation is “overwhelmed” and has already “reached its limit.”
“Our larder is empty and we have nothing left to give” said the President who added “ We have given help from our own
pockets in cases of extreme neccessity, such as buying milk.”
Speaking on Radio Calasparra the President said the people of Calasparra were aware of the situation but their ability to help was limited as they were also affected by the crisis.
“Today people who never dreamed they would need help are crossing the threshold of the Red Cross.”
The Red Cross are currently assisting 500 people: double the number who asked for help last year.
This humanitarian organisation is appealing to the population to give again. Non perishable foodstuffs can be donated at the Red Cross Office in the OAPs Club in the mornings and at the Red Cross HQ in the afternoons.
Francisco Morcillo has also announced that the Alegria Theatre Group will perform “Bajarse al Moro” on June 16 in aid of the organisation.
The local Red Cross will also launch an appeal for the donation of milk soon.
