MIXED NEWS ON ENERGY BILLS

As predicted electricity bills will rise by some 3% in January but the Government has frozen the price of bottled butane gas.
The 20 million domestic customers on the “Tarifa de Ultimo Recurso” (TUR) with capacity for 10 kilowatts or more will be affected by the price hike.
This is the fourth consecutive rise in the price of domestic electricity including the increase in IVA introduced in September.
Domestic customers can “shop around” for cheaper deals from different electricity companies and your existing supplier must facilitate the change process by law. However, the Consumer Office advises caution as many customers are confused by offers and/or duped by the small print. Anyone with any doubts should seek advice from the local Consumer Office but, if you don´t speak Spanish, you will need to take an interpreter.
On the other hand the price of a bottle of butane gas has been frozen at 16.1euros.
Telephone landline charges are also on the increase after being frozen at 13.974 euros since 2008.
Train tickets on RENFE regional and local lines are also set to rise by an average of 3%. However, tickets for the high speed train, AVE, are set to fall to encourage people to use the service.
