GENERAL STRIKE IN CALASPARRA

While nationally the General Strike was reportedly observed by between 70 and 90% of workers here in Calasparra the support was described as “scarce” by the Deputy Mayor, José Vélez.
Support was the strongest in local schools where 80 to 90% of pupils observed the strike and 50 to 60% of the teaching staff.
The local Chamber of Commerce had announced it would not support the strike but some shops and businesses did close.
A third of workers at the Health Centre observed the strike without any major disruption to services and all was reported as “normal” on the Industrial Estate.
The Socialist Party, PSOE, with the support of the United Left, called a demonstration in the main square at lunchtime to read the manifesto of the strike.
