Residents of Calasparra are amongst 14,700 temporary workers who will travel to Nimes, Montpellier and Aviñón in France to work in the grape harvest.
Some 600 workers from the region expect to earn between 1,600 and 2,000 euros a monthly, supposing that food and accommodation is provided.
The UGT union has announced that it began to receive applications to work in the French harvest back in June and that, this year, the harvest will begin two weeks earlier than usual.
The UGT describes the movement of labour as “logical” as the hourly rate for working in France is 9.40 cents compared to the 6.43 euros offered in Murcia.
The UGT can offer advice to workers considering travelling to France but cannot secure contracts. The union advise anyone interested in working in the French harvest to contact families in the region who have been travelling to France for the harvest since the 1950´s.
