Rebecca Wills, who moved to Calasparra from the UK just over a year ago, has won the second prize in the 1 Certamen de Pintura de Paisaje «Entre Lavandas» (the first Landscape Painting Competition «Among the Lavander») part of the recent Lavander Fayre in Moratalla.
Her painting, an imaginative combination of two emblematic areas in Moratalla: the caves in the Campo de San Juan and the lavander fields in full bloom, was based on photograhs and sketches Rebecca made when she visited Moratalla with a Spanish friend who knew the area.
«It was a great surprise» says Rebecca, when she received the news she had won the 300 euros second prize, » and the standard of the other paintings, in my opinion, was very high».
Already pretty fluent in Spanish Rebecca was happy to be interviewed by Digital Television Calasparra about her success and her up and coming exhibition in Calasparra in the upstairs gallery of the Rice Museum from November 16 for two weeks.
Although painting is her passion she is also interested in photography and recently she had another chance to practice her Spanish when she took part in a Photography Workshop and Exhibition in Calasparra.
«For me learning Spanish is important. I have decided to make my life in Spain and living here is much more interesting when you speak the language.
Rebecca has several art degrees including a doctorate in the History of Art and spends several hours daily painting.
She is clearly enchanted with Spain and lists the climate, the culture, the history, the mountains and the people, «who have been very kind to us», among the advantages of living in Calasparra.
