The owner of a dog that slipped down black plastic on the river bank, attempted to rescue her and became trapped below on the water’s edge.
Luckily the incident ended happily after family and friends came to her rescue but readers are warned that walking by the River Segura, where the black plastic has been laid close to the footpath to kill off the canes is extremely dangerous.
If a dog, a child or an adult, maybe distracted by their mobile, slips on the plastic it is unlikely they will be able to climb out. The plastic is dangerous when dry, worse when wet. The worst case scenario is that someone will fall in the fast moving and deep River Segura. The best case is a terrifying incident and rescue.
Nexonr has reported the incident to the local Civil Protection Office and the Head of the Civil Protection has offered to carry out an inspection immediately and ensure that a warning appears on the Town Hall webpage and Facebook.
He also agreed that some precautionary measures should be taken to protect the public where the plastic is laid close to footpaths.
The photo with this article shows the plastic laid on the river bank just beyond the River Beach and the stone arches, along from the Municipal Canoe Club (Piraguismo). Nexonr understands that some dog walkers, trying to avoid the dreaded processionary, use this path because there are no pine trees. However, readers are warned that until measures have been taken to protect them it is advisable not to use the path or, if they do, to keep dogs on a lead.
In case of any emergency readers are reminded to call 112.
Editors Note:
Nexonr understands there are plans to extend the black plastic on the river bank footpaths along the rice fields. We have alerted the Civil Protection of this possibility as the footpaths are very close to the river bank and, if precautionary measures are not taken, will present a serious risk for walkers, pets, children and, of course, wildlife.
