The Ministry of Environment, Universitites, Investigation and Mar Menor, is introducing a «Shock Plan:» fumigation against the plague of processionary caterpillars in the region, including on the Sierra del Molino and the Sierra del Puerta in Calasparra.
The treatment will also aid the control of drillers and mistletoe.
These areas of pine trees will be treated with phytosantiary products, sprayed from the air, and a biological insecticide.
The first two areas to be treated, starting from this week, will be Murcia and Calasparra.
This treatment against the processionary will be carried out with a phytosantiary product, made from the bacteria, Bacillus thuriengiensis, and a biological insecticide especially apt for aero-spraying, in this case by helicopter.
Both products employed aim to eliminate the processionary in the pine tree, Thaumetopoea pityocampa, an endemic plague that affects pine trees in the region, particulary those on the sunny side of the Monte where tmeperatures are mild and in repopulated areas. The proliferation of the processionary is favoured by the drought and abnormally high temperatures of this autumn.
In Murcia 1.139 hectares of municipal land will be treated: the Majal Blanco and the public mountains in the regional park of El Valle and Carrascoy.
