Today, Wednesday October 9, brought good news for the region´s farmers as the Commission for the Exploitation of the Tajo Segura authorized water transfers that will guarantee irrigation water for the next three months.
As the Murcia region is in the middle of the most serious drought for years the Segura Water Board had warned famrers there was insufficient irrigation water for «half of the horticultures already planted» and appealed to farmers not to plant winter crops.
Farmers groups and Associations in Murcia had asked for a Tajo Seguro Water Transfer to alleviate the situation but this had been ruled out as the water resources at the head of the Tajo river were considered too low.
However, today, in spite of protests from farmers groups in the Tajo irrigation area, a water transfer of 27 hectares monthly for the next three months has been authorized as the Tajo reserves were deemed to be «sufficient».
The latest data from the Ministry of Ecological Transition is that the reservoirs in the Murcia region currently stand at 15.7 per cent with only 179 cubic hectares of water reserves compàred to 270 at the same time last year.
