CATASTROPHIC STORM DAMAGE IN CALASPARRA

Following the intense storms, torrential rain and hailstones in Calasparra on Monday Calasparra Town Hall has applied to the regional and central government to declare the local area, and other affected areas of the region,  «Catastrophic Zones.»
The intention would be to declare Calasparra as «gravely affected by an emergency» in accordance with the Law 17 of July 9, 2017.
After the intense rainfall ravaged Calasparra on Monday afternoon Calasparra Town Hall decided to initiate the formalities to declare our area a catastrophic zone.
Calasparra was one of the municipal areas in the Murcia region worst hit by the storms on Monday when streets, public squares, roads and urbanisations were flooded to the point of being rendered inpassable and floods and hailstones damaged soft fruit crops and agricultural land.
Some 67 litres of rain fell per square metre in Calasparra in less than two hours affecting public infrastructures, businesses and agriculture.
An area is designated «catastrophic» under the law if there is material or pesonal damage as a result of a natural disaster, or as a result of human action, which provokes a civil emergency.
Calasparra Town Hall has also applied to both the regional and national government for the creation of a Works Plan especially targetted at those municipal areas affected to enable them to repair and reconstruct the public infrastructures damaged. At the same time the Town Hall has applied for help under the Employment Plan in order to carry out the repairs.
The Mayoress of Calasparra, Teresa Garcia said:» With the object of being able to accede to the resources and necessary assistance in order to recuperate normality in the town we have initiated these formalites through urgent applications.»
