COLLECTING AND CARING FOR STRAY DOGS IN CALASPARRA

It would be difficult to find anyone in Calasparra who has not seen an abandoned dog, often in poor condition, and nearly always hungry and uncared for, wandering aimlessly around our area after some heartless person has thrown him/her onto the streets.
There are many motives for abandoning dogs, and these include puppies that grow into large dogs and thus “outgrow” their owners´ affections, to people who go on holiday and abandon their dogs rather than pay for kennels or holiday care.
Puppies have been found in plastic bags in the river or dumped in an irrigation ditch.
One adult dog was found tied up at the Puerta Cave with no food and no water and a severe injury to its paw.
Females are often abandoned simply because they become pregnant.
The new law on pet protection will make all of these activities illegal, and they will carry heavy fines, however, if a dog is not chipped (also illegal) it makes it difficult to find the owner.
Here in Calasparra we are lucky enough to have an association, Dogs Rescue, run by multinational volunteers, which helps abandoned dogs, giving care, shelter and food, and looking for families to adopt them. However, the demand often exceeds their capacity and they are appealing for help.
Although the new law aims to reduce the number of abandoned dogs by making it illegal for owners to allow their dog to get pregnant and bans shops from selling puppies or dogs it may have little or no immediate effect.
If you want a canine companion please adopt one from Dogs Rescue rather than buying from breeder (only official breeders will be allowed to sell puppies under the new law).
Adopting an abandoned dog can be a wonderful experience as you watch, an often nervous puppy or dog, grow into their new surroundings, learn to be loved and to love, to trust and be trusted.
Nexonr staff can speak from personal experience as we adopted, after our two much loved dogs died, a very nervous, six month old puppy from Dogs Rescue. She has grown into an affectionate, well-adjusted and much loved member of our family.
You can help by buying a ticket to the Summer Fiesta Night; making a donation; volunteering your time; or adopting one of the many strays waiting for a loving home.
If you would like to help in any way, please contact Debby or Janet on the Summer Fiesta Night Poster or contact them via their Facebook page: facebook.com/DogsRescueC (You can also buy tickets on the night).
