There will be an emergency «Anti-Crisis» meeting of the government´s cabinet tomorrow Saturday to introduce measures to alleviate the effects of electricity, petrol prices and general inflation.
Yesterday the Government announced that IVA (VAT) on electricity bills would bills wouold be reduced from 10% to 5%. A move which will have a nominal effect on bills.
Speculation over the measures the Government may take include increased taxes on the electricity and petrol companies including a «windfall tax» which may have a deterrent effect but are unlikely to have any immediate effect on electricity bills and petrol prices.
There is pressure on the Govedrnment to introduce measures targetted at families and those on the poverty line rather than blanket rebates such as the recent 20 euros on the price of a litre of petrol which was widely absorbed by increases in price at the petrol stations.
