The General Department of Traffic in Spain has issued guidance for motorists buying the V16 flashing light signal currently on the market, but which will not meet legal requirements from January 2026.
The DGT points out that the official specifications for the V16 have not been completed, thus, any of the lights purchased to date will not be legal from January 2026.
The specifications for the V16 will be published on the DGT website when they are available and the new light will have an obligatory connection to the DGT “vehicle platform 3.0” which will automatically notify the DGT of the accident and this information will be relayed to the automatic information panels (see diagram).
There are currently no products on the market which fulfil the legal requirement to connect to the DGT platform.
The V16, connected to the DGT platform, will be obligatory from January, 2026 and will replace the warning triangle for use in case of breakdown or accident.
Editors Note:
Although the current flashing lights available do not fulfil the legal requirements in effect from January 2026, the DGT advises the current models available should be used in conjunction with the warning triangles.
