PUERTO CAVE RE-OPENS TODAY APRIL 30

The Puerto Cave, which has the longest horizontal subterranean route in the Murcia region and which has been closed since 2020, will reopen today.
This week Calasparra Town Hall has signed a concession with Tecminsa and Qalat to manage the cave over the next 10 years, “aiming to improve and advertise these unique resources that are an example of extraordinary beauty and singularity,” according to the Mayoress.
The new management must make a major investment in the site and has proposed a cafeteria and shop as well as an advertising campaign, potholing expeditions and workshops, improved lighting and air quality and WIFI.
The cave was discovered in 1966 although the exploration and verification of the site took place later in the 60’s.
In 1995 the cave was opened for tourism with 700 metres of galleries and in 2009 a new access for tourists as installed, a visitor´s centre and a further 300 metres of galleries were opened to the public.
In December 2020 the cave was closed when the existing contract with Qalat, who had managed the site, expired.
