More than 10,000 web pages will join the blackout today, January 18, in protest against the introduction of an anti piracy law in the United States.
The protest, the biggest in the history of the Internet, counts on the participation of some of the major websites including Google, Wikipedia, Reddit, WordPress and Mozilla.
The initiative, which involves a 24 blackout or the deactivation of web sites, forms part of the protest called by the non profit making organisation Fight for the Future . The campaign, known as SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act” aims to halt the progress of the bill.
Pages such as Wikipedia have posted a message: “Imagine a world without free knowledge…..now US Congress is considering legislation which could seriously prejudice the free and open Internet.”
The law aims to combat the illegal downloading of films, videos, music and other contents protected under “intellectual rights.”
