The sun shone on the 50 or so volunteers who gave up their free time yesterday to plant trees and shrubs along the banks of the River Argo behind the Roman Arcos de Rambla viaduct.
The Environmental Volunteer Day was organized by the Department of Environment at the Town Hall to clean up and maintain the area and replant shrubs and trees typical of the region.
Volunteers were mostly youngsters, including a group from the Municipal Canoe Club, who they were divided into two work groups headed up by the Mayor of Calasparra, Jesus Navarro, on one side of the river and the Head of the Department of Environment, Rafa Romero Gomez, on the other.
Spirits were high and enthusiasm was in abundance despite volunteers having to trek some distance to fill buckets with irrigation water and getting wet feet in the soggy, marshy terrain.
While the work groups were busy planting and watering the Civil Protection officers were preparing an “almuerzo” fit for royalty with sausages, chorizo, bacon and, of course, pig´s ear, sizzling away on an open fire.
Well done to everyone and a big thank you from all in Calasparra for helping to restore another rural corner of our town!
