IDENTITY CARDS FOR PETS AND OBLIGATORY COURSES FOR DOG OWNERS

Owners of cats and dogs will be obliged to obtain a “DNI animal” for their pets under a new law, The protection and Rights of Animals, due to come into force next year.
Among other new measures are obligatory courses for dog owners, the prohibition of sacrificing pets, and an end to purchasing pets in order to promote adoption.
The objective of the DNI animal for pets, which will be obligatory from next year, is to establish a national database to identify and protect animals from being abandoned.
The DNI animal aims to easily identify and fine those who abandon animals and must be registered with different information about the animal such as vaccinations and veterinary treatments. It will complement the microchip system.
It is not yet clear the form this document will take but it is likely the DNI will be electronic and obligatory for all pets and will incorporate a QR code which will enable the police to accede to the animal´s history.
