The Town Hall, along with all the other municipal areas in the region of Murcia, has signed up to the Activa programme which prescribes physical exercise for patients to improve their health.
The programme, which is an innovative project involving an exhaustive control of ill people in order to improve their quality of life, was piloted in Murcia last year. The aim is to reduce inactivity amongst patients by 45% between as set out in the Regional Health Plan for 2010 and 2015.
The people who participate in the programme will have a specialist monitor over a three month period to act as a guide and advise participants on appropriate exercise regimes. Some 60 local GPs and 40 nurses will also give advice and support for progressive improvement of the participants’ physical condition as well as introducing exercises and activities in the form of sport.
The Activa Programme will function due to the joint efforts of the Health Department, the Town Hall, and the Health Centre and this coordinated approach aims to foment self care and personal responsibility.
In the region of Murcia more than 60% of the population is overweight or clinically obese and more than 50% of adults over 18 years take no form of physical exercise.
