Autumn has finally arrived and as temperatures begin to fall the winter vegetables are beginning to come through.
The sprouts are forming nicely on the stems and the parsnips and Swedes are fattening up below the surface. They should all be ready for Christmas!
This week the “ecologico” stall, which stands outside the gates of Cine Rosales, is able to offer broccoli for the first time and this week, as the mud has subsided, we will be able to dig up some Jerusalem artichokes.
We have some small, crisp lettuces, crunchy carrots, peppery radishes, and pungent spring garlic for sale.
The Calasparra sun means there are still some tomatoes and cucumbers in the garden and some baby spinach for salads or for cooking.
The peppers are almost finished however most of the green peppers are turning red and make a delicious soup or roasted they make a delightful tapa or can be put in oil as a preserve.
We have been greatly encouraged by the popularity of our ecological vegetables and the stall already has many regular customers, English speaking and Spanish speaking. Any form of agriculture is very hard work and working without the aid of chemicals and artificial fertilizers even more so. It is a labour or love but the enthusiasm of our customers makes it all worth while.
