Congress has approved a new extension to the State of Alarm which will run until midnight on June 7.
The relaxing of restrictions will be “prudent and in a coordinated manner” according to the President, Pedro Sanchez, who added: “We can only anticipate the course of the virus if we are safe during every phase of the transition to a new normality”.
The vote in favour of the extension was 177 with 162 voting against and six abstentions.
As predicted centre right party Ciudadanos voted with the Government and right wing Partido Popular and extreme right wing Vox voted against. However, confusion reined in the right wing camp as the leader of Vox voted with Sanchez by accident.
