The region of Murcia is celebrating today as the so called “Mediterranean Corridor” for goods rail transport has been included in the list of main priorities for the EU as Brussels prioritizes transport links between the principal European commercial centres.
The autonomous government of Murcia has already promised to invest 20,00 million euros in the project between 2014 and 2020.
The rail link will be between Alicante, pass through the region of Murcia and part of Andalusia and is aimed to compete with road transport between Algeciras and Madrid. The region are also considering connecting the Atlantic axis between Cieza and Chinchilla in order to reach Madrid and France by Irún.
The proposal by the Ministry of Promotion to construct two grand axes (Mediterranean and Atlantic) has been accepted. This will join five “corridors: Algeciras-French frontier (passing through Murcia); Oporto-Burdeos via Valladolid; Bilbao-Valencia, crossing Zaragoza; Lisbon-Valencia via Madrid and Albacete; and Algeciras-Madrid-Zaragoza (known as the Central Corridor).
Europe has assigned some 31,000 million euros between 27 member states towards the project however the main investment must come from the countries themselves
