ECOLOGISTS WIN BATTLE TO SAVE LOCAL BEAUTY SPOT

The regional government has issued an ultimatum to Calasparra Town Hall to close the Motorcross Track in the Sierra del Molino and transfer the activities to another site within a month or face the consequences.
The root of the order is an official complaint made by the group, Ecologists in Action, claiming that the track breached environmental protection orders and endangered an area of outstanding local beauty. A new technical report submitted by the organization has been accepted by the region.
The 33.500 square metre motorcross track is located in an area of 3.2 hectares of the Sierra del Molino which is subject to a Special Protection Order for Birds (ZEPA).
The regional government issued a written ultimatum to Calasparra Town Hall on October 11 to remind the local administration that on March 20, 2009 they had been notified that the track was causing “considerable damage” to the natural environment and should be moved to another site within two years. It also detailed the measures that should be adopted while the track was in operation.
The regional government state that the two year period had passed and the track has not been moved nor have the required measures been put in place. “The damage to the environment has continued,” says the report.
The local administration will face judicial sanctions if it fails to comply with the new order.
