The path through the Almadenes Canyon has been closed by the Department of
Water, Agriculture, Stockbreeding, Fish and Environment, until July 15, to
protect nesting and breeding of birds in danger of extinction including the
partridge eagle.
The measure affects three kilometres of the canyon path.
Information notices have been posted signaling areas which are closed and those
which remain open because there is no danger to wildlife.
The reproductive period of the partridge eagle stretches from December to July
when the fledglings are able to fly. The particularly sensitive time is the
incubation period and from February to March when the offspring are young.
Human contact or presence can result in the adults leaving their nests for long
periods which can result in the death of the fledglings.
The affected area is in the centre of the Canyon where there are areas of
exceptionally high natural value and habitats of protected species.
